Minors

Requirements:

Seven LTFR courses (at least 28 units), four of which (16 units) must be upper division:

• Eligible lower division courses (up to three): LTFR 2A, 2B, 2C
• One specific eligible upper division course: LTFR 104 (pre-requisite for other upper division LTFR courses)
• Additional eligible upper division courses: LTFR 100-190

Requirements:

The Literatures of the World minor is unique in that it allows students to define their own focus of the minor (for topics not already covered by one of our other minors). It requires seven courses (at least 28 units total), five of which (20 units) must be upper division:

• Eligible lower division courses (up to two courses from any one of the following sequences): 
  • CAT 1, 2, 3
  • DOC 1, 2, 3
  • HUM 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
  • MMW 11, 12, 13, 14, 15
  • LTEN 21, 22, 23
  • LTEN 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 31
  • LTFR 2A, 2B, 2C
  • LTGM 2A, 2B, 2C
  • LTGK 1, 2, 3
  • LTIT 2A, 2B, 50
  • LTKO 2A, 2B, 2C
  • LTLA 1, 2, 3
  • LTRU 2A, 2B,104A
  • LTSP 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 2E
  • LTWL 4A, 4C, 4D, 4F, 4M
  • LTWL 19A, 19B, 19C
• Eligible upper division courses (within the parameters below): LT** 100-190
  • At least five upper division courses, which must fit into a single unifying theme/focus.  Some tips for choosing a theme:
    •  It should be narrow enough that it is clearly a subset of the courses we offer and not something that most of our courses could fit within.
    • It should be broad enough that you have built in flexibility for course selection and there will be sufficient course offerings for you to complete the minor in a timely manner.
    • For example, 
      • "Comparative World Literature" - too broad
      • "Modern Chinese Lit & Film" - too narrow
      • "East Asian Lit & Film" - just right

Minor declaration process:

1. Send us a message in the VAC with your chosen theme for the minor.  For example:
   Hi Literature,
   I am ready to declare a Literatures of the World minor, and my chosen theme is "East Asian Lit & Film".  I will submit the minor declaration next.  Thank you!
2. Submit your proposed course list via the Major/Minor Tool in TritonLink.  Feel free to list more than the minimum number of upper division courses, to give yourself multiple options. It is recommended that you refer to the list of courses being offered in the upcoming quarters (Course Offerings), rather than all relevant courses from the Catalog.  You can add more courses later, if needed. All courses must clearly fit into your defined theme.

• Once the minor has been approved, our advisors will add your approved course list to the minor options on the degree audit.  If students want to add more courses to their approved options, the will send us a message in the VAC with the details.  As long as the courses clearly fit within your theme, we will add them as options on your degree audit. For example:
  Hi Literature,
  My chosen theme for the Literatures of the World minor is "East Asian Lit & Film".  I would like to add the following courses to my approved options: LTEA 141, LTEA 142, LTEA 144, and LTCH 101.  Thank you!
  
• If students choose to take less lower division courses, they will need to complete additional upper division courses to meet the minimum course/unit total.  All upper division courses for the minor need to fit within the chosen theme. Many of our upper division courses may be taken more than once for credit - see Catalog for details.
